Unformatted text preview: Jan 11 th , 2008 Humanities week 1 lecture 3 Genesis: Biblical and other floods, Eden and Other Gardens Introduction Similarities of genesis to other texts Diff. between genesis and other texts Genesis arose from a historical context Recognize the spin thats put on the stories The Creation Babylonian Cosmogony: Enuma Elish o Male God fresh water, female God salt water have children o Kids become noisy and unruly, parents resolve problem by killing kids, but kids escape. Kids chose a leader in the war between the generations. o Leader is god of thunderclouds. The kids win by slaying his mother Takes first half of her carcass to make heavens, second half to create the land. o Creates the humans to tend for the animals and trees. o This story is recited annually (as a poem) to assure in the coming year the chaotic forces of nature would be held in check and all of creation would follow the established season and laws. Humans were created as butlers to the house o The characters are more the norm The Genesis Account o Contrast: only one god in genesis, has no birth, no biography, no family no children. No sexual procreation. Doesnt have to contend with anyone, no children....
