STA 3024 Assignment 1: Due Friday January 21rst 2011 in class. This assignment will be graded out of 30 points. 1. Suppose a study is conducted to see whether there is an association between a person’s resting heart rate and whether or not he or she gets cancer. 1200 cancer-free people between the ages of 45 and 85 are followed for three years, with their resting heart rate recorded in a checkup every six months. At the end of the study, doctors also note which patients were diagnosed with cancer at some point during those three years. Is this an observational study or an experiment? Explain. 2. An election is about to take place in a small town T. with 6,500 voters. Assume we are interested in the association between people’s opinion about candidate A who’s a female and their Gender. The following table represents the data collected during the election.
