“Social Gospel” If people were to lead pure lives, they must have enough to eat, decent homes, and opportunities to develop their talents. Washington Gladden defended labor’s right to organize and strike and denounced the idea that supply and demand should control wage rates. Gladden never questioned capitalism. By the 1890s a number of ministers had gone to Socialism. Settlement Houses Earnest souls began to organize settlement houses. The first American example was the Neighborhood Guild, in the lower East side of NY in 1886 by Dr. Stanton Colt. The most important settlement house workers were women fresh from college. “ Radical Progressives: The Wave of the Future” Hard times of the 1890s pushed many toward Marxist Socialism. The Industrial Workers of the World(IWW)was ant capitalist. “ The working class and employing class have nothing in common.” Haywood was attracting attention to strikes by unorganized workers.
