RELG 270 Indigenous Traditions Thousands of small scale societies o Distinct languages, kinship systems, mythologies, ancestral memories, and homelands m More than 200 million people throughout the planet today… but probably the majority of the world's religions Humans within a powerful spirit world of the local bioregion o Binding characteristics of most traditions o The land is exceedingly important o Very spiritual Aboriginal Peoples of Canada 4-5% of Canada's population Hundreds of different nations and people recognized in Canada First Nations, Inuit, Metis Traditions Self-determination o People of minorities trying to govern themselves and do everything by themselves (medical, education, political, etc.) Target of external economic domination o What we see with the idea of western progress Indigenous culture in danger of extinction o Often the case with indigenous cultures and minorities - diluted by society o Struggling to pass along the values of the tradition - losing connection to language and rituals o The same argument can be made for certain mainstream religions as well Common Themes in Indigenous Traditions and Ecology Seven Generation Sustainability o Iroquois - The Great Law o The great grandparent clause Great Grandparent - Grandparent - You - Child - Grandchild - Great Grandchild o Connected to the past and future o The Great Binding Law "The thickness of your skin shall be seven spans…" "With endless patience you shall carry out your duty and your firmness shall be tempered with tenderness for your people" "In all of your deliberations in the Confederate Council, in your efforts at law making, in all your official acts, self interest shall be cast into oblivion" "Look and listen for the welfare of the whole people and have always in view not only the present but also the coming generations, even those whose
