Dean Search Dr. Frabizio Survey of Jazz October 10, 2011 Billie Holiday Eleanora Fagan (Billie Holiday) was an American singer and songwriter that was extremely prominent during the late 1930’s and throughout the 1940’s. Billie had the kind of voice that you never forget, however she was brought into this world with one major problem. She was African American. This disadvantage did not prevent her incredible voice from being heard. Through hard work, perseverance, and a want to succeed, Billie succeeded beyond belief. Billie sung with such emotion and it was shown in every one of her performances. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that she loved what she did and that she was great at it as well. Her talents arrived just in time because the great depression was occurring and people needed an escape from their problems.

Unformatted text preview: Billie provided that with her talented voice and love for music. Billie Holiday was famous for various different songs, but none stood out more than the song Strange Fruit. This song was a strong anti-racism statement that became a permanent part of her reputation. Due to the fact that she was an African American, wherever she went there would always be someone putting her down. Strange Fruit has been called the original protest song. It is simple, but effective poetry. At a time when political protest was not often expressed in musical form, the song depicted lynching in all of its brutality. This opened many peoples eyes and made them aware of the cruelty taking place in the south. All in all, Billie was instrumental during the depression and had an everlasting impact on her generation....
