04:56 Identity theft statistics It affected as many as 11 million Americans in 2009 The costs associated with identity theft totaled $54 billion in 2009 for consumers The costs associated security breaches totaled $139 billion in 2009 for businesses It can take up to 5,840 hours to correct the damage of identity theft The average victim spends 330 hours repairing the damage It takes 26-32% of victims btwn 4-6 months to straighten out problems It takes 11-23% of victims btwn 7-12 months to resolve their case How does it happen? Privacy In the digital world, we trade privacy for convenience Ex: paying bills online; cell phone companies can track where you are; email companies  Facebook default privacy settings getting more and more lax; now will show gender,  picture, friends, and more info to everyone unless you change your settings
