Director and Auteur Theory According to Goodykoontz and Jacobs (2019), “when applied to film directing, auteur theory posits that the director is indeed the author of the film, imprinting it with her or his personal vision” (section 8.3). In other words, auteur theory is a theory that the director is the author and visionary of the film. There are not many directors who are authors of their own films. Majority of directors’ hire outsiders to paint out their visions for them; however, D.W. Griffith director of Way down East and Isn’t Life Wonderful? is one who writes and produces his own films. Auteur theory is a vital theory especially for D.W. Griffith because it holds him accountable with meeting the criteria of technical competence, distinguishable personality, and interior meaning when creating his films. D.W. Griffith met the criteria posed by auteur theory in two of his most known films, Way Down East and Isn’t Life Wonderful? . In his film Way Down East , according to his viewers and audiences he did an amazing job with creating the film.
