Power and its forms n Social power: Ø The ability to exercise one’s will over others (Weber) Ø Not an individual attribute; power is a social relationship n Forms of social power: Ø Force: the actual or threatened use of physical coercion to impose one’s will on others Ø Authority: power that has been institutionalized and is recognized by those over whom it is exercised (legitimacy) Ø Influence: the exercise of power through persuasion (defining the situation, making a successful argument)
