American University of Sharjah College of Engineering Department of Civil Engineering Instructor: Arshi Faridi E-mail : afaridi@aus.edu Course: CVE 202 Experiment #: 5A AGGREGATE CRUSHING VALUE Purpose: To determine the aggregate crushing value in accordance with BS 812: Part 110: 1990. Background: The aggregate crushing value gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under a gradually applied compressive load. The standard method is applicable to aggregates passing 14.0 mm test sieve and retained on a 10.0 mm test sieve. However, for other sizes of aggregate, an alternative testing procedure is implemented. In this experiment, as the size of aggregate tested will be that passing 10.0 test sieve and retained on the 6.3 mm test sieve, the alternate testing procedure in used. Equipment: 1. A steel cylinder, open ended with plunger and base plate and a nominal internal diameter of 75 mm (Fig. 1). 2. A tamping rod made out of straight metal of circular cross section, 8 mm diameter and 300 mm long. One end shall be rounded (Fig. 1). 3. A balance of at least 500 gm and accurate to 0.2 gm. 4.
