Provide a short definition/description for the following terms re-lated to the phosphorus cycle • Plant uptake- soil P is absorbed by root hairs in either it’s organic or mineral form. • Precipitation- process that aqueous phosphorus-containing compounds become solid phosphate; creating less soluble forms of P. • Fixation- phosphate fixation; occurs at the point of application. • Weathering- gradual reduction of matter (a process of erosion) Phosphate weathers from rocks, and increases availability to soil in forms of solution. • Runoff- non-fixated/mobile phosphorus that is dissolved or transported via water, air, etc. • Erosion- mineral surface degradation • Leaching-under what conditions? When plant removal reduces amount of soluble phosphorus, more soluble phosphorus is created in the soil. This process increases the likelihood of phosphor-us becoming mobile to contaminate soil.
