Pathology of the Nervous System II Chapter 13 Friday, April 8 REVIEW Final Exam Lectures 14-24; 45% Head Injury • range from a minor bump on the head to a devastating brain injury • Common causes of head injury include traffic accidents, falls, physical assault, and accidents at home, work, outdoors, or while playing sports. • signs and symptoms of a head injury may occur immediately or develop slowly over several hours. Neurologist, neurosurgeon Head Injury • classified as either closed or penetrating • closed head injury, the head sustains a blunt force by striking against an object • penetrating head injuries, a high velocity object breaks through the skull and enters the brain Skull Fracture Some of the different types of skull fracture include: • Simple: a break in the bone without damage to the skin • Linear or hairline: a break in a cranial bone resembling a thin line, without splintering, depression, or distortion of bone • Depressed: a break in a cranial bone (or "crushed" portion of skull) with depression of the bone in toward the brain • Compound: a break in or loss of skin and splintering of the bone. • Injury may be manifested by loss of consciousness and various neurological disturbances • Injured brain becomes swollen and often shows evidence of pinpoint hemorrhages caused by disruption of small intracerebral blood vessels Skull Fracture Case Study-Skull Fracture • 10-month-old male who sustained an unwitnessed fall off a patio deck • height of the fall was estimated at 2-3 meters and he landed on a concrete surface • Relatives were nearby and immediately ran to the screaming child. There was no reported vomiting or seizure activity.
