1)a. List the major parts of the human eye. (10 points)The cornea is a clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It is the first and mostpowerful lens in the eye's optical system. Tears that flow over it and aqueous humor in thechamber behind it keep it nourished. The cornea can be damaged from: accidents, infections, andgenetic defects. The pupil is the hole in the center of the iris that light passes through. The irismuscles control its size. Iris is the colored part of the eye: brown, green, blue, etc. It is a ring ofmuscle fibers located behind the cornea and in front of the lens. It contracts and expands openingand closing the pupil, in response to the brightness of surrounding light. Just as the aperture in acamera protects the film from over exposure, the iris of the eye helps protect the sensitive retina. The retina is the film of the eye. It converts light rays into electrical signals and sends them to thebrain through the optic nerve. The sides of the retina are responsible for our peripheral vision. The center area, called the macula, is used for our fine central vision and color vision. The retinais where most the problems leading to vision loss occur. The fovea is an indentation in the centerof the macula. Its diameter is only 1.5 mm or about 1/16 inch. This small part of our retina isresponsible for our highest visual acuity. It is the center of our central vision. The lens focusesthe incoming image to the retina. The pupils are the opening in the center of the iris throughwhich light rays enter the eye. The lens is transparent disk-shaped structure behind the pupils thatadjust its shape to allow focusing on objects at varying distance. The rods are specializedreceptor cells in the retina that are sensitive to light. The cones are receptor cells in the retina thatenable human to see fine details and color in adequate light. The fovea is a small area at thecenter of the retina that enables humans to see fine details and color in adequate light. The opticnerve carries visual information from the retina to the brain. Lastly, the blind spot is an area ineach eye where the optic nerve joins the retinal wall and no vision is possible.
b. List the name of the structure that contains the receptor cells. (1 point)
