VIS 21B Arts of Asia Winter 2011 1 Buddhist Terms Hinayana (Lesser Vehicle): Salvation for the few through self practice. The ideal is to obtain Arhatship (Ch: Luohan, J: Rokan) a saint. Only 24 + 1 Buddhas. Mahayana (Great Vehicle): Everyone has the Buddha potential. Bodhisattvas help others to achieve salvation. It includes Pureland, Chan (Zen), and many other schools. Tantrayana or Vajrayana (Esoteric): Prescribe to all Mahayana traditions, but places a much stricter focus on rituals making the enlightenment process faster. Bodhisattvas and Mahasiddhis (crazy yogis) are important. It includes Tibetan Buddhism, Shigon (true-word) school of Japan, and others. Buddha (Ch: Fo, J: Butsu): “Enlightened Being.” Buddhas are teachers not gods. Depending on the tradition there can be many Buddhas, but usually when practitioners speak of the Buddha they are referring to Shakyamuni. Shakyamuni (Ch: Shijiamoni, J: Shakamuni): The historical Buddha, the Buddha of this age. His real name is Gautama Siddhartha and was born ca. 563-484 BC in Magadha, central India.
