ENG-45L – Lab Syllabus Properties of Materials Laboratory FALL Quarter, 2011 Syllabus An electronic version of this document for this class is available online at: smartsite.ucdavis.edu LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS The experiments to be done in this course, in the order they will be done, are: 1. Bonding: Student will investigate a variety of physical properties associated with different bond types 2. Mechanical Properties: basic mechanical properties as determined by standard tensile and hardness tests 3. Equilibrium Phase Diagrams, the Bi-Sn System: Identify several unknown % diagram using cooling curves for a range of samples of bismuth and tin 4. Recovery, Recrystallization, and Grain Growth: practical and scientific issues dealing with the relationships between properties, processing and structure of materials. Cartridge brass (70/30 Cu/Zn) is annealed and then hardness and tensile tested to observe the changes in a number of mechanical properties. The microstructures are then examined to
