Hormones and Sexual Behavior Lecture 3/3/08 Monday Extra Credit: March 10 th . Class will end 20 minutes early. Those who wish to do optional extra credit can stay and take a short quiz. Article will be on a journal article (to be posted on WEBCT) Up TO 12 points. Neuroendocrinology o The study of the influence of the hormones on the NS o Effects of hormones Developmental: important in development of male vs femalte anatomy, physiology and behavior Activation: activation reproduction-related behavior in mature adults Hormones: many other influences besides sex. Glands: o Pituitary gland – releases hormone, connected to hypothalamus Has two parts (anterior and posterior) Anterior pituitary = releases tropic hormones (stimulate other hormones) such as gonadotropin (stimulates gonads to release gonadal/sex hormones) o Adrenal gland – releases small amount of sex hormones o KNOW LOCATIONS OF HYPOTHALAMUS AND PITUITARY (anterior and posterior) Sex hormones o Three types: Androgens : e.g. testosterone Estrogenes : e.g. estradiol Progestins : e.g. progesterone o Both ovaries and testes release all of these, but in different amounts depending on the sex. o
