Lecture Two January 9 th , 2008 Early History of the Bible Our Approach o The bible has a history. Not just a given; does have origins in human history. Bible Facts o Generic Types History : Pentateuch/Torah First 5 books (genesis, exodus, etc) are thought to be written by Moses himself. (traditional thinking) Modern thinking disagrees. Wisdom Includes the books of Jobe, song, proverbs. Prophecy Represent collections of sayings and speeches attributed to the specific prophet in question. The words of the prophet themselves are poetry. o Hebrew Bible Canon Torah or the Pentateuch: Ezra; after 458 BC 70 AD: Destruction of second temple 90 AD: Council of Jamnia Council is composed of respected Jewish scholars, and established a collection of scriptures. Contains fewer books than the bible. No official status. There was no temple to give it a official status. But they were only known because of their prestige. Similar collection of scripture, containing more books, was formed in Egypt. *** This process of canon creation is widespread and shows that people like or dislike certain books judging from the difference of size. o Prehistory of the Torah/Pentateuch (first 5 books) Modern findings state that the prehistory of the Torah was passed down by oral and written forms. This allowed interaction between written and oral traditions.

Oral tradition: 1800-400 BC Written tradition: 1000-458 BC o In 1000 BC the United Kingdom was established by David. Joins northern tribal areas to Judah in the south. Written tradition begins. Competing oral and written versions of history of Israelites. Oral traditions tend to reflect different views from the tribal areas. Four basic documents and source to combine into the Torah. Each The documentary Hypothesis (different sources that compose the Torah) o Doubles: Yahweh and El Two versions of the same story. One version giving God the name of Yahweh and the other El. o “E” Ephraim, El: 922-722 This source uses the divine name El. Dates 2 century from 922 to 722 BC. It is when the northern and southern kingdom split, after Solomon dies. Expresses the view of the Shiloh. A religious center, represents the original cult center for the Israelite God. In their version of the story, Moses gets the spotlight. o “J” Judah, Yahweh; 848 – 722 Yahweh in German would also start with a J. J represents the views of the priests of Jerusalem. North community destroyed in 722. Priest bring important document of E and are merged into a single account in J. The combined document includes events form Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers. o
