ATP is a Nucleotide Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA. They contain a nitrogen-containing base, a 5-carbon sugar, and a phosphate group. ATP is a nucleotide that contains adenine (base), ribose (sugar), and three phosphate groups. Hydrolysis of the molecule results in the removal of a phosphate group and the release of energy.
