IDS 400 Milestone Four The lens of natural and applied sciences can be applied to the topic of transgender inequality in several ways. . Biology tells us that there is a difference between what gender is and what sex is. The lack of advances in medical science that allows for gender reassignment surgery is one way that many people in the transgender community face inequality. Allowing for transgenders to get the reassignment surgery shows equality, however on a personal or intimate level it can create some inequality. According to Scientific American, sex is supposed to be simple – pink or blue. However, it is becoming clear that a pair of chromosomes do not always suffice to distinguish girl or boy (2017). Sex is biological traits and gender is social identity. Gender identity is more of an inner sense of being either male or female regardless of physical anatomy (Neergaard, 2018) Sex is what is assigned at birth. As there are advances in medical care for transgender people, there are still gaps. A survey of 163 physicians in the Midwest, found that 15% of doctors would refuse to care for a transgender patient (Monaco, 2019). In order for a transgender person to get the reassignment surgery, there several requirements that are needed to be complete first. These requirements involve the person to seek a referral from a qualified mental health professional. If a non- transgender person wants to undergo any cosmetic surgery, they are not required to see a mental health professional first (Aetna, 2002). There should be other requirements that don’t make transgender people feel like they are not mentally stable or to shame them. Having the choice for the gender reassignment surgery shows that there is an advancement in equality for the community. However, in a personal and intimate level the transgender who get the reassignment can face inequality. Some people find out a person has had gender reassignment surgery and they
treat that person differently. The person may not have even known the person they were talking
