Did He Really Do It? Freud on Oedipus Oedipus and Us The Oedipal Complex: in the formation of the self 1. FAMILY ROMANCE-male child adopts father as model and imitates feelings, the father is a rival towards little boy because he wants mother to himself (sex). These feelings are repressed. 2. Oedipus fate was caused by this feeling Latent Desires: 1. Savagery was that inside Oedipus really wanted to do what he tried to prevent 2. Sophocles acknowledges that having sex with mom in dream is normal. Teiresias even tells Oedipus the prophecy 3. Latent-audience is in the darkness of the character as the plot unrevealed 4. Expresses hidden desires of everyone without everyone noticing. Plato on Tragedy 1. Psychological part imitates what is on the stage are consequently strengthened on the audience 2. Aristotle says watching tragedies help let out neg. emotions Aristotle’s Defense 1. Oedipus is extreme because if it can be “ok” every tragedy will have no neg. affects.
