Jan 30, 2008 Introduction to the Odyssey Introduction 1) The Date of the Odyssey a) Took place during the 8 th century B.C., but not certain. The story is not set in that time, but it is just of what he knew at his own time. b) Border of dark age and the archaic period c) Contemporary with the E and J books d) Homer, only evidence, from these two poems 2) The Troy Cycle a) The odyssey account events after the city of Troy is destroyed b) The odyssey is only one poem of several c) Composed of the Iliad, the Odyssey and 6 other poems d) Only the Iliad and the Odyssey were preserved e) The other 6 poems were shorter and not by homer. They included a lot more magic and supernatural events. The Structure of the Odyssey 1) The Nostos: a return or homecoming a) The Nostoi of Agamemnon and Menelaus i) Recounts both homecoming (Agamemnon, Menelaus, and Nester) to represent the opposing possibilities of how the plot will unfold. ii) Agamemnon had a bad homecoming
