Contrary Arguments : on the Gods Book described his assertion to argue with equal persuasiveness on both sides Epistemology 1. “man is the measure of all things: of those that exist, that they exist’ and of those that do not, that they do not.” ~ position on nature of knowledge 2. Plato’s ideas and forms give third source 3. Protagoras acknowledges no external ideas. What is true is what each individual perceives it to be true. The catch ~ disadvantages and advantages are structured or contained within community. Laws & persuasion provides rules of community, which prevents from turning into a radial view The Itinerary of Protagoras Introduction: What Craft is Sophistry? 1. warns him to look out for because Protagoras is tricky 2. speaking itself is not a Techne 3. tradition element ~ door stick or servant doesn’t open door
