Burger King Corp. v. Rudzewicz 471 U.S. 462 (1985) Fact: Procedural Facts: In trial Court, Burger king won $228,875 + Attorney costs. Court of Appeals reversed it. USSC granted certiciori Operative Facts: Florida’s long-arm statue extends jurisdiction to any person (even to people not their citizen or resident), as long as they failed to perform acts required by the contract to be performed in [Florida]. Rudzewicz and a business partner decided to apply for a burger king franchise license. Rudzewicz would be responsible for the financial burden of Burger king and the partner would be responsible for the operating portion of it. After an approval with burger king, they signed a contract which obligates them to pay burger king $1 million dollars after the course of 20 years. The business went down after they started to open up the store and they weren’t able to make the payments (lack of customers). They continued to operate the store even though burger king filed a notice of default on them. Issue:
