Jan 18, 2008 Biblical Values Introduction -Descriptive vs. Prescriptive -not interested at what the bible says is correct or incorrect (ten commandments- prescriptive) -interested in what the bible shows his characters actually doing -PROPOSED QUESTION: what are the things the people in the bible seek out as the good life -what are the things they strive to avoid -what are they trying to achieve or acquire. -what are the accepted modes in achieving success & avoiding failure -ARGUEMENT: values outward signs of material success, values based on pressure toward behavior and group membership The Good Life -Def: the things which all things are trying to aspire will show the values of the group -what God provides - Abraham: takes a long time for covenant: all these things are marks of success: all descendants are prosperous & do very well in terms of living. -God promises Fame -Fruitfulness (lots of offspring) -Land (prosperous, flocks) -Victory in War (upper hand) -Ideal life = materialistic prosperity -ex. Jacob live with Laban: increased prosperity -God favors causes household to prosperity -ex.
