Jan 28, 2008 Slavery in the Hebrew Bible What’s a Slave? - Encyclopedia Britannica definition: o Slavery was a form of dependent labor performed by a non-family member. The slave was deprived of personal liberty and the right to move about geographically as he desired. There were likely to be limits on his capacity to make choices with regard to his occupation and sexual partners as well. Slavery was usually, but not always, involuntary. - Six Criteria o Property o Objects of law: water bottle, you take the master of slave to court. o Minimal rights o No kin: no line of natal descent, outsiders except connection with master o Products of labor: belong to someone else o Physical reproduction: no control over it Slavery in Biblical Law - Idealized or optimistic institution - Hebrew for Slave defined in the bible o “Work”: Problem that bible doesn’t distinguish between slave or worker. o The king’s “servants” o Subordinate o Imprecision of Word o
