1 WRT205: The Politics of Music MLA Quotation Guide Remember to introduce the author in question and tell us why he/she provides an important perspective (give credentials, in other words): According to Bethany Bryson, a sociologist at James Madison University, “Individuals use cultural taste to reinforce symbolic boundaries between themselves and categories of people they dislike” (885). Note the punctuation at the end of the quotation: end quote, parenthetical citation, and THEN the punctuation (unless the punctuation mark is a ! or a ?, in which case it would go before the parentheses). Note that because I have included the name of the author in the same sentence that contains the quote, I do NOT need to use her name in my citation. If I had used a quote without naming the author first, however, I would include her name in the citation: (Bryson 885). No comma between the last name and the page number, and no “ p. 885.” Note the importance of a google search to verify your author’s credentials (as you
