ANP203 Intro to Archaeology December 8, 2011 “Realms” Video Aztecs Mexico City (modern day) state, one of many 1428 – 3 states combine military power and take control of stuff Tenochtitlan = center of empire Templo Mayor found in 78 under Mexico City o God of War temple and God of Water temple Water (agriculture) and war (conquest) sustained empire Saw eagle land with serpent on cactus Sacrificed 1000s of humans/year – cut hearts out with knives of volcanic glass Base size of army on “size” of threat – had largest army on the land – won often Maintained garrisons outside of empire o But obtained empire members without war sometimes as long as they paid their tribute Skulls, pottery, sacrificial victims, jade masks, gold jewelry Used skulls as intimidation to keep acquired tributaries in line Tribute amount depended on how much work was required to take over their land Tributes usually taken to Tenochtitlan for redistribution or for king’s use
