Evolution October 31, 2011 Evolutionary Analysis: The Study of Adaptation II What is an adaptation? An adaptation is a phenotypic trait that confers a reproductive advantage on the organism bearing it. Adaptations are maintained by natural selection. How to determine whether a trait is an adaptation? 1. Identify local trait 2. Identify what genetic variation trait may have 3. Hypothesize why particular genetic variants of the trait have a selective advantage. 4. Test the predictions of the hypothesis: a. Comparative method b. Experimental method c. Observational studies Identifying adaptations: Experimental Manipulation Case Study: Color Vision in Primates o New world dichromates vs Old world trichromates How to determine if a trait is an adaptation: o Identify local trait Color vision o Identify what genetic variation trait may have Trichromatic vs. dichromatic o Hypothesize why particular genetic variants of the trait have a selective advantage. What is the adaptive advantage of having color vision? Dichromatic Trichromatic In the above picture, the red leaves are not palatable, but the green leaves are nutritious. With trichromatic vision, distinguishing between important colors becomes possible Hypothesis: Trichromatic vision allows primates to more easily locate ripe fruit. o
