Defamation is a tort you will come into contact with very frequently in your everyday life. The media, and particularly the internet, is overflowing with potential defamation claims. Today, due to the emergence and popularity of blogs, Wikipedia, You Tube, and other effortless ways of publishing and instantaneously disseminating opinions about others, defamation is especially rampant. Think how easy it is to post a rumor about someone on the internet, and instantly have that rumor spread across the globe. Look at websites such as perezhilton.com, defamercom, and gawker.com. These websites publish unchecked, unedited, and unsubstantiated information about celebrities, and instantly disseminate them to millions of readers around the world. With all this defamation occurring around you every day, it is important for you to recognize the tort, and to be able to critically evaluate the statements you read in order to determine for yourself what is true, and what is, in fact, a legally redressable civil wrong.
