Geo 349 #9 10/06 Human – Environment Interaction II Deforestation of the Mediterranean World - Greece – eroded plain near Corinth – only about 1/5 of land is suitable for farming - Difficult to find land in Europe not affected by human harm, pollution, etc. Deforestation North of the Alps - Western Europe has lost 99% of its original forests - Bialowieza – last remaining tract of Europe’s temporal forest Dutch – North Sea Costal Reclamation - 45% of the area lies below high tide level and ¼ lies below mean sea level - Dutch have tried to reclaim land - Set up dykes and use windmills - Netherlands – Zuiderzee Afsluitsdijk (completed 1932) o Built a dyke across the sea and became a freshwater lake. Also tried to reclaim rich clay at the bottom of the Zuiderzee. Reclaimed 626 sq. miles. - Polder landscapes take 20 years to use - Delta Plain Tidal Barrier (1986) created because of flood o 1953 flood disaster in Netherlands - Water is rising along coast and could really affect the Netherlands, Belgium, and a bit of France
