Geo 349 #8 10/4 Human-environment Interaction I Traditional Agriculture Systems - infield, outfield (marginal land, located in Alps, Northern Scando Shield) - open field, mixed farming - Mediterranean - Dotted line = northern limit of olive growing o Major part of Mediterranean food culture - Grey = wine/grapes growing - Nomadic herding - Agricultural margins - Traditionally you could not grow wheat in Germany, Sweden, Poland, etc. Traditional Mediterranean Farming System - Mediterranean “triad” = olives, wines, stock, food crop (usually wheat) - 2 field rotation (wheat in winter on ½, other half empty and switch) - Mediterranean society can be divided between two types of farmers: ones dealing with meat and ones dealing with harvesting - Basic of Mediterranean food is bread and oil - Vineyards are separated and on a slope - Fig trees, wheat, olives, Spanish maize, Spanish oranges - Heavily eroded land, deforestation/desiccation due to overeating and other things Mediterranean Agricultural Settlement
