January 11, 2011 Darnley Dessimus HU Id. @026-38-409 Class Notes I. What is Philosophy? A. Philosophy – is ethics, which is what is valuable in life. Your ethics decide how you are going to live your life, thus they have the most practical effect on one’s life, and so philosophy is the study of ethics and the difference between ethics and morals. B. Discussion 1. Meaning of words a. Ethics (Greek: ethos) – customs; as in right and wrong b. Morals (Latin: mores) – customs; as in social culture, norms c. Axiology – the collective term for ethics; also the philosophical study of value. d. Ontology – the philosophical study of what exists e. Meta – underneath or about; to indicate a concept which is an abstraction from another concept C. Notable People 1. Anna Julia Haywood Cooper (Aug. 10, 1858 - Feb. 27, 1964) – She was the fourth African-American woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. 2.
