ME 375 HOMEWORK #2 Spring 2009 Out: Jan. 20 th , 2010 Due: Jan. 27 th , 2010 As was the case for HW1, free body diagrams (with coord. systems, internal forces, etc.) and element law equations clearly indicated for any modeling problem. Also, equations of motion must be in proper form – input(s) alone on right hand side. Show all your work for full credit. PROBLEM 1 : (30%) The dynamics of vertical motion of a vehicle can be approximated with a simple 2 mass model, the “Quarter-car Model”. The model captures the interaction of the suspension stiffness and damping, the tire stiffness, the vehicle body mass and the tire/wheel mass with variations in the road surface. Pictorially: Where: - M is ¼ the vehicle body mass [kg] - m is the mass of one wheel/tire [kg] - K s is the suspension spring stiffness [N/m] - K t is the wheel stiffness [N/m] - C s is the suspension damping constant [Ns/m] Here: - x(t), the input , is the vertical road surface profile ( note: the input is a displacement, not a force
