Homework No. 2 Due: Friday, September 10 Problem No. 1 (40%) Part a) A gear pair is made up of two gears A and B. Gear A has a mass of M , an outer radius of 3 R and centroidal radius of gyration of k A , whereas gear B has a mass of 2 M , outer radius of 3 R and centroidal radius of gyration of k B . The two gears are attached to fixed, horizontal shafts passing through their centers and mesh together as shown in the figure. A cable is wrapped around the outer radius of gear A with a spring of stiffness K attached between the free end of this cable and ground. A second cable is wrapped around an inner radius of gear B with a block of mass M attached to the free end of this cable. Let ! B describe the rotation of gear B where the spring is unstretched when B = 0 . i) Derive the equation of motion (EOM) for this system in terms of the coordinate B . ii) g B
