Charles strode into the room with a breezy, Hello, Daniel and John. He easily remembered our names from the previous weeks potluck dinner for first-grade families. Then, in what was quickly becoming a signature gesture, Charles raised his hands in mock disbelief. What? he exclaimed. No kids? Where is everybody? John and I laughed, Charles easing our first-day jitters. I asked Charles to find his name tag on a small table by the doorway. The name tag search was designed to give the children an immediate sense of accomplishment as they entered our classroom.
