1 CEE 5734 – Urban Hydrology and Stormwater Management Aquifer Explanation for March 30 Glenn E. Moglen I would like to expand on the presentation I gave yesterday with respect to the “aquifer” object in EPA SWMM. This object is added to a the SWMM model when modeling continuous streamflow so that we have a hydrologic resource that is able to simulate flows during the dry periods between storms. Aquifer streamflow is modeled in EPA SWMM using the equation: ) ( ) ( ) ( 3 2 * 2 * 1 1 SW GW B SW B GW GW H H A H H A H H A Q (1) The definitions of all these terms can be accessed in the online help for EPA SWMM and the defining drawing for these terms was shown in Slide 13 of the March 30 lecture. The specifications for the homework are to set A 1 (Groundwater Flow Coeff.) and B 1 (Groundwater Flow Expon.) to 1 with all other groundwater flow parameters set to 0 as shown at right. The result is that equation 1 simplifies to: ) ( * H H Q GW GW We simulate with the aquifer contributing directly to
