1 Virginia Tech Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering CEE 5734 – Urban Hydrology and Stormwater Management Homework #3: The SCS Tabular Method and Determination of Detention Storage Due: February 16, 2011 This homework extends from last week’s work with the SCS/NRCS graphical method to the tabular method which can accommodate multiple sub-areas of non- homogeneous make-up. We also extend to the concept of detention basin storage to address the need to reduce flood peaks from land use change. Finally, we briefly examine differences between the SCS Type II storm distribution and rainfall data obtained from the NOAA Atlas 14 data set. In all calculations students will demonstrate an appropriate understanding of significant figures. Tasks: 1. If you haven’t already, read the posted online documentation for TR-55 at the class course documents. Focus especially on “Chapter 5: Tabular Hydrograph Method” and “Chapter 6: Storage Volume for Detention Basins”.
