Unformatted text preview: MAC 2311 STUDENT GUIDE Spring 2010 CONTENTS: Introduction (Syllabus) Calendar Lecture Outline Sample Exams INTRODUCTION COURSE CONTENT. MAC 2311 is the first in the three-semester sequence MAC 2311, MAC 2312, MAC 2313 covering the basic calculus. The content of this course is given precisely in the lecture outline in this booklet. PREREQUISITES. MAC 2311 assumes that you have essential precalculus skills necessary to succeed in calculus. To enroll in MAC 2311, you must have earned a grade of C or better in MAC 1147 (or its equivalent, both MAC 1140 and MAC 1114), earned calculus credit through an exam or earlier coursework, or have passed the Calculus Readiness Assessment (CRA) and attained the required minimum score. You may take the CRA through the ISIS homepage isis.ufl.edu ; click on Placement under My Online Services. The complete list of appropriate prerequisites for MAC 2311 can be found on the Math Department web page,math.ufl.edu/courses/advising/ ; link to Precalculus and Calculus op- tions, then to Calculus 1 courses: prerequisites and placement. You can also check with your advisor, the MAC 2311 course coordinator, or in the main math office (Little 358) to be sure that you are eligible to register for this course. The course begins with a short review of topics in algebra and trigonometry (appendices A through D). You should already be competent in working this material. We strongly recommend that a student having a minimum score on the CRA or any student having difficulty with this material consider first taking MAC 1147, a four credit precalculus course reviewing algebra and trigonometry skills. You may switch courses on ISIS during the drop-add period. Once that ends, you have one additional week to make your decision. After the drop-add period, the paperwork to move back to precalculus MAC 1147 must be completed through the math department by Friday, January 15 at 4PM . See the course coordinator, Mrs. Smith, in Little 378. TEXTBOOK. Calculus: Early Transcendentals , sixth edition by Stewart. The text can be purchased (from the publisher or local bookstores) in separate volumes including just the chapters necessary for the individual courses in the calculus sequence. These are prepackaged with the access code necessary to complete the required online homework. You may also purchase the hard back copy of the full text with an access code. If you have a used copy of the text, you may buy an access code at www.webassign.net . MAC 2311 HOMEPAGE. The MAC 2311 homepage provides basic course information and lecture notes, and is updated regularly with the latest assignments and announcements. The contact information for the course coordinator is posted on this page. The address is www.math.ufl.edu/ ∼ jysmith/mac2311 . You may link to it through the E-learning course page, or the math department website, www.math.ufl.edu/ (link to people, then lecturers)....
