Week 10 Assignment 2AbstractDepression is an issue that has gained significant amounts of attention throughout the years. This is especially true for adolescents. In fact, research suggest that one in five adolescentsare diagnosed with depression (Norton, 2010). Due to this alarming statistic, the identification/ implementation of effective interventions is imperative. The identification and implementation ofsuch interventions can lead to a decrease in related issues such as suicide, substance abuse, violence, self-injuries, and/or other related mental health concerns (Lu, 2020). This paper will analyze the factors related to adolescent depression, the impact it has on this population, and the effective interventions that have been identified by research.
Week 10 Assignment 3IntroductionResearch has indicated that depression is one of the leading causes of disability in children and adolescent populations (Vibhakar et. al, 2019). This is especially true for children whom have experienced traumatic events. Examples of such events include sexual abuse, physical abuse, death, being linked to someone whom has a long-term disease, natural disasters, community violence, and family violence (Vibhakar et. al, 2019). Research has indicated that adolescents whom have experienced such events are 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with major depression than those whom have not experienced such events (Vibhakar et. al, 2019 ). The following paragraphs will analyze some of the factors listed above and describe the impact each can have on this population. Sexual Abuse & DepressionThe first traumatic event that will be discussed is that of sexual abuse. Many research articles have correlated sexual abuse and depression. But, it is important to understand why this is so to better serve the population. It is theorized that an adolescent exposed to sexual abuse mayexperience high levels of shame, helplessness, and guilt (Sekowski et. al, 2020). Many times, children and adolescents experience sexual abuse at the hands of a close family member or friend. Theorists have suggested that this relationship causes the adolescent to experience helplessness (as the adolescent has to depend on the individual for his/her needs) (Sekowski et. al, 2020). This feeling of helplessness subsequently lead to feelings of shame and guilt (Sekowski et. al, 2020). It is believed that such feelings result from an inability difficulty in processing the trauma and damaged relationship. As a result of such difficulties, adolescents tendto turn such feelings inwardly and the feelings of helplessness, shame, and guilt strengthen (Sekowski et. al, 2020). The strengthening of such feelings subsequently lead to the increased
Week 10 Assignment 4development of depression and suicidal behaviors (Sekowski et. al, 2020). The persistence of depression as a result of sexual abuse during this time can have detrimental impacts that persist until adulthood. As a result of depression stemming from sexual abuse, the adolescent may
