Syllabus for Sociology 100: Discussion Section Instructor: Valeria Bonatti E-mail: [email protected] (Temporary) Office Hours: Friday 10:00- 10:50 and by appointment Location: Espresso Cafe at the Undergraduate Library Sections: ADK Tuesday 12:00- 12:50 Gregory Hall 221 ADL Tuesday 1:00- 1:50 Gregory Hall 331 AD1 Thursday 9:00- 9:50 Armory 242 Welcome to SOC 100 everybody! Whether your major is Sociology or you’re taking this class out of a general education requirement or other forms of coercion, I am looking forward to working with you this semester and hopefully we’ll be able to engage in discussions and debates that could either relate to your main field of interest or give you meaningful break from your main studies. We will meet once a week in a discussion section where you can discuss, engage and debate based on the ideas and concepts learned from your readings and lectures. This means that you should complete all the readings pointed out in the class syllabus from both the textbook and the reader before the section begins. I know it is a lot of reading for one class so I will hand out other useful materials, such as articles and video clips, during our sections and will not require you to view them in advance. Please remember that our discussion sections are not lectures . What this means is that in order for you to be successful in the course, you must actively participate and intervene in each week’s discussion. We will have a few review sessions (before the midterm and the final exam) but most of the time I will work as a facilitator for your own discussions and debates. You should always treat your classmates and the instructor with respect.
