OBJECTIVE: The aim of this experiment is to conduct heat of combustion and chemical composition measurement tests in order to demonstrate the use of a bomb calorimeter. APPARATUS: 1) Parr 1341 Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter Unit 2) Ignition Unit 3) Oxygen Tank 4) Computer 5) Data acquisition system SAMPLE USED: Coke powder with active coke powder. THEORY: Any process that results in heat being generated and exchanged with the environment is a candidate for a calorimetric study. In order to measure heats of reactions, we often enclose reactants in a calorimeter, initiate the reaction, and measure the temperature difference before and after the reaction. The temperature difference enables us to evaluate the heat released in the reaction. There are two types of calorimeters and they are isoperibol and bomb calorimeter. The classification of the calorimeters is based on the working conditions. The bomb calorimeters are used for the reactions that take place under constant pressure. Therefore, it can be harmful if we can not control the calorimeter; explosions can occur. It is much more complex than an isoperibol calorimeter. And the working principle of isoperibol calorimeters is the constant volume. In our experiment we used an oxygen bomb calorimeter. We have put our coke powder inside the calorimeter to combust with oxygen. In order to determine heat released we must first know the heat capacity of the calorimeter and it’s equal to its water equivalent (W). Since, Q= WΔT=Qwire+Qc.p We can easily evaluate the ΔH of the material that is asked. We know the water
