The objective of the experiment is to conduct heat of combustion and chemical composition measurement tests in order to demonstrate the use of a bomb calorimeter. APPARATUS ● Parr 1341 Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter Unit ● Ignition Unit ● Oxygen Tank ● Computer ● Data acquisition system SAMPLE ● Coke powder (%0.8 S + %1.1 H 2 O+ %? Ash + %? C) THEORY Invention of calorimeter has brought a wide perspective to temperature and heat measurements in modern science. Eventually, more techniques based on calorimeter has been developed with technology. All processes involving heat exchange or generation are parts calorimetric studies. There are mainly two types of calorimetry which are measurements based on constant pressure that involves pressure- volume work and measurements based on constant volume that doesn’t involve pressure-volume work There are also three main variables: the calorimeter temperature Tc, the temperature of surroundings Ts, the heat Q produced per unit time. The types of calorimeters are: isothermal calorimeter: Tc = Ts = constant and Q varies adiabatic calorimeter: Tc = Ts ≠ constant and Q varies isoperibol calorimeter: most widely used calorimeter Ts = constant and Tc is measured before, during and after reaction. Determination of Water Equivalent: The heat capacity is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of entire calorimeter by 1 K. The heat capacity of the calorimeter is determined by its water equivalent, W. The formula is Q = W∆T.

For endothermic reactions , calibration is made by dropping into the calorimeter a quantity of metal of known heat capacity cooled initially to a known temperature
