Unformatted text preview: Middle East Technical University Department of Metallurgical & Material Engineering MetE 206 Materials Laboratory Experiment 8 Electrochemical Cells Lab Assistant Eylem Kahramansoy Tahir Mahmut Beydola 1394014 Objective In this experiment we find out the thermodynamic properties of a liquid alloy that is used in an electrochemical cell. Apparatus Furnace Multimeters Electrodes Thermocouple Sample Used BiSn alloy (Xs n = 0.2) Pure Sn Electrolyte Theory Electrochemical cells have two types: formation cells and concentration cells. We obtain the thermodynamic data from the electrochemical cells which operate with fused salt electrolyte pure metal and metal alloy. Gm(Sn) = -n*F*E G A M = R T ln a A a A = X a a G i xs = RTln i The process is two metals forming a solution at constant temperature and pressure. X A X2m2= (m1+m2) While mixing, The Gibbs energy changes during the process can be written as G=G-G G is the total Gibbs energies of the components before mixing. G is final total Gibbs G is the total Gibbs energies of the components before mixing....
