51 C. Plant Cell Types: A living plant cell possesses a rigid cell wall , a structure not present in animal cells, which surrounds the protoplast , the living contents found inside the cell wall. The protoplast, which is surrounded by a plasma membrane (located inside the cell wall), contains the nucleus, cytoplasm, and other membrane-bound structures such as endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and chloroplasts. In addition to cellulose, the secondary cell wall also contains lignin , a chemical that renders the cell wall inflexible. Figure 1. Representations of a typical living (A) and nonliving plant (B) cell showing the relative position of the plasma membrane, primary cell wall and secondary cell wall.
