51 C. Plant Cell Types: A living plant cell possesses a rigid cell wall , a structure not present in animal cells, which surrounds the protoplast , the living contents found inside the cell wall. The protoplast, which is surrounded by a plasma membrane (located inside the cell wall), contains the nucleus, cytoplasm, and other membrane-bound structures such as endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Unformatted text preview: Some cells also have a secondary cell wall that is deposited inside the primary cell wall after the cell has stopped expanding (Figure 1B). In addition to cellulose, the secondary cell wall also contains lignin , a chemical that renders the cell wall inflexible. Figure 1. Representations of a typical living (A) and nonliving plant (B) cell showing the relative position of the plasma membrane, primary cell wall and secondary cell wall. What do you think the major function of cells with a secondary cell wall is?...
