iv BIOLOGY 1020 GENERAL INFORMATION Preface: Biology 1020 is an introductory course on organismal diversity and forms part of the core program offered by the Department of Biological Sciences. Together with Biology 1010 (The Cellular Basis of Life), you are provided with suitable background to continue your study of biology in the Department. Biology 1020 is designed to provide you with a comparative study of the major lineages of organisms (focusing mainly on the eukaryotes) from an evolutionary perspective. The primary goal of this course is thus to develop an understanding of the evolution and general characteristics of each major taxonomic group. The laboratory component of the course has been designed to closely complement the lecture component. You will have an opportunity each week to examine in depth the organisms described in lecture so that concepts introduced there will be reinforced in your laboratory. There are two major approaches to the study of biology.
