Unformatted text preview: We need laws to: 1. Protect society, the individual, their property/goods & rights eg right to vote, freedom from discrimination etc. 2. Provide social cohesion 3. Code of acceptable behaviour 4. Provide a mechanism for dispute resolution 5. Reflect societys values & attitudes To be effective laws: 1. Must be known by the community 2. Easily understood (lacking in ambiguities) & able to be changed 3. Acceptable to our current values 4. Enforceable Changing values in society: 1. As our values & attitudes change, the law must remain acceptable to individuals in society must change to keep up with these changing values. 2. Eg. Statute Law Amendment (Relationships) Act 2001 recognises same sex couples in areas of probate, health and ownership of property Changes in society: 1. Society is constantly changing & laws need to keep pace with this. 2. Shop Trading Reform Act 1996 (Vic.) deregulates shop opening hour Advancements in Science: 3.
