PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN ERP PRODUCT SELECTION IN SMALL/MEDIUM vs. LARGE SIZE ORGANIZATIONS Ali Osman Sevim, Elif Murat Abstract: In this paper we explore the project management aspects and characteristics of ERP product selection process in small/medium size versus large organizations. In today’s business environment competition between companies and complexity of market network is growing at a fast pace. Therefore making efficient use of resources, integrating different departments in planning and executing becomes more and more strategic. As a result ERP applications are implemented at an increasing speed in different scale firms. Given availability of technology and relatively inexpensive hardware, more and more small/medium size organizations are making use of ERP applications. Many different ERP products are available. So, designing and executing the product selection process in an efficient and optimal manner is critical. In this paper, we treat this selection process as a project and determine the main characteristics inherent in the management of this project. We analyze the ERP product selection process characteristics of different scale firms and determine the important differences and similarities in their ways of handling this project management problem. INTRODUCTION Optimal design and efficient execution of ERP product selection process is a project management problem which an increasing number of firms face everyday. In today’s competitive world businesses are seeking to make the most efficient use of resources, integrate departments and supply chains and act in the quickest and most optimal way possible to maximize their profits. As a result, more and more businesses are making use of ERP applications in their organizations. Availability of technology and relatively inexpensive hardware enables more and more small/medium scale firms to make use of these applications. So, a growing number of firms including small/medium scale and larger ones are considering buying ERP products. The first step and maybe the most important step for a business to adopt an ERP application is to choose the product that it will implement. ERP product selection is a dynamic process that also affects the later stages rather than a static one step optimization. Viewing this process from the aspect of project management gives great insight in understanding the important characteristics of this process and enables one to determine the steps one should take to reach an efficient and optimal result.
