Research : Determine if Nim Chimpsky can learn to communicate in American Sign Language. During the day, Columbia students tried to teach Nim to communicate in sign language. Nim did learn 125 signs, but he never learned grammar. Language requires grammar. Nims longest sentence: Give orange me give eat orange me eat orange give me eat orange give me you. Chomskys theory was not rejected . Techniques for Describing Psychological Phenomena Important limitation of case studies You cant readily generalize. Everyone is different. If you have studied an atypical person, then the behaviors you just studied might be very different in other people. In the Nim Chimpsky study, the same study was conducted with other chimps, and to date, none of the chimps have learned grammar. Measures the self-reported attitudes, opinions or behaviors of people usually by questioning a representative, random sample of people. Techniques for Describing Psychological Phenomena Survey Method People will answer the same question differently depending on how it is worded. A recent example: Important Factors in Surveys: (1) Wording Effect Question: Do you favor or oppose ___ serving in the military?
