October 17, 2011 MATH 230 HOMEWORK # 2 (Due October 24, 2011, Monday) (Submit your homework to my office till 5:00 pm) (Please, DO NOT forget to write your section number to your homework) 1. Consider a wireless cell with five identical channels. One possible experiment consists of checking the system to see how many channels are currently available. Each channel is in one of two states: busy (labeled 0) and available (labeled 1). An outcome of the experiment can be denoted by 5-tuple of 0 s and 1 s. A 0 in position i of the 5-tuple indicates that channel i is busy and a 1 indicates that it is available. Find the expected value for the number of available channels. 2. The game of "craps" is played as follows. A pair of fair dice is rolled. If the sum is 7 or 11 you win, if the sum is 2, 3, or 12 you lose. With any other sum, you continue to roll until you roll the initial number again (then you win) or you roll a 7 (in which case you lose). Let X be the r.v and X=0, if you lose on the first roll, X=1, if you win on the first roll and X=2 if you continue to roll
