Earthworms • Introduced species arrived in Jamestown, spread by fisherman, gardeners, transported plants • Accelerate decomposition • Lead to an increase in soil C loss as earthworms consume leaf litter • Bacteria that consume their casts (casts can also be washed away, removing N from the system)

Earthworms • Physically alter the habitat – Removing leaf litter, altering erosion – Traveling vertically, mixing soil layers, transporting materials • Result in loss of understory plant and tree species, changes in soil structure, decreased nutrient availability • May lead to an increase in other invasives, such as garlic mustard and European slugs • Spread depends on litter quality, quantity, soil factors • Rate of invasion front depends on climate, topography and moisture www.nrri.umn.edu/worms
