Chapter 8 Rotations, torques, and angular momentum o The rotational kinetic energy of a rigid object: 2 1 2 rot KI , where I is the rotational inertia, ω is the angular velocity ( ω must be measured in radians per unit time). o The definition of rotational inertia: 2 I mr , where r is the perpendicular distance between a particle of mass m and the rotation axis. The rotational inertia depends on the location of the rotation axis. o Torque: rF r F   It is only the force component perpendicular to the rotating object that contributes to torque! You MUST use a vector decomposition to identify this perpendicular component. o A torque which produces a clock-wise rotation is negative.
